MABOU MINES/SUITE
RESIDENT ARTIST PROGRAM

Mabou Mines/Suite is a laboratory for artists to experiment with performance ideas. Applications by artists to the Residency Program are accepted every other year. The Suite is not a showcase or a producing situation. In order to be eligible, the artist must already have made work. Resident Artists are appointed to the Suite by the Artistic Directors of Mabou Mines to investigate a particular idea or ideas. New work, or new aspects of work, must originate in the Suite and will be shown at the end of the Residency at whatever level the artist feels will be most beneficial to the work. Audiences are invited at no charge. If the investigation requires, artists will have the use of Mabou Mines equipment after discussion with a Technical Advisor.

Eligible artists include, but are not limited to: directors, performers, writers, poets, dramaturgs, composers, painters, sculptors, photographers, dancers, singers, choreographers, film & video artists, digital & computer artists. No registered students are eligible to apply. Nominations by established artists or Arts Organizations are encouraged, though no third party nomination is in any way required.

In the past, the program has been funded through generous grants from the Jerome Foundation, Foundation for Contemporary Arts and The NYC Department of Cultural Affairs.

Appointment to Mabou Mines/Suite Resident Artists Program entails:

-A stipend, contingent upon continued foundation and government support.

-Mentoring from Mabou Mines Artistic Directors.

-Monthly group meetings with the appointed artists and mentors to share and discuss works-in-progress and ideas.

-Scheduled studio rehearsal and performance space available on a 24-hour basis (to be shared with Mabou Mines).

-Limited administrative and technical support.

-Limited assistance in locating other residencies, funding, etc. to further Artist′s work.

-At least one free showing, to be held at ToRoNaDa, open to the public, of work created during the Residency. The work need not be complete. The showing can be a forum to share the outcome of whatever was explored during the Residency.

The rules of the Program require that Resident Artists:

-Attend monthly meetings.

-Participate in scheduling and sharing rehearsal & performance time in studio.

-Participate in the mailing of a performance calendar.

-Provide two people for each showing to receive the audience.

-Provide any and all skilled running crew necessary for showings.

-Allow only skilled technical personnel to operate Mabou Mines′ lighting and sound equipment.

-Understand that there is limited storage of equipment, props, etc. in studio.

-Keep studio secure and clean.

Notices of appointment to the Residency will be mailed early in September, 2009.
